How to Print With Smaller Size Paper (5 Steps)

Prepare your document in a word processing program such as Microsoft Word. Adjust the margins to your preferred size and use the spell-checker to ensure that there are no spelling errors.
Make sure that your printer is connected to your computer, then go to your word processing program's Print menu, which can generally be found in the File menu on a Windows PC and a Mac. A print dialogue page will appear where you can choose the printer you're going to be using.
Choose the appropriate paper size after choosing your printer. On a Windows PC, this can be done by clicking 'Properties,' then clicking the 'Paper/Quality' tab, where you will find a drop-down menu for paper size. The default is 'Letter --- 8 1/2 x 11,' but the menu lists a large number of different sizes including 8x10 and 5x7. If the size you need isn't listed, click on the 'Custom' button and enter your own measurements. On the print menu of a Mac, click on the blue button depicting a downward-pointing arrow next to the name of the printer you'll be using. This will expand the menu to reveal more advanced options, including paper size, which defaults to 'US Letter --- 8.50 by 11.00 inches.' As with the PC, you can then choose a different size from the drop-down menu or add in your own.
Load the paper into your printer. Make sure to have extra paper on hand in case something goes wrong and you need to re-print one or more pages. Most newer printers have guidelines for different paper sizes; generally, you will want to place the paper all the way to the right side of the tray. If your printer has a sliding paper guide, push over until it rests against the edge of the paper. This will help the paper to feed evenly into the printer so your document will come out straight.
Click 'Print' on your computer. You may want to start by printing only the first page of the document to make sure that the print job is working properly and there are no flaws, such as the text running off the side of the page. Once the first page has printed to your liking, you can then proceed to print out the rest of the pages.

How to Clean Lexmark All in One Printers (8 Steps)

Clean the cover and glass area. With a soft cloth, wipe the cover of the unit and then the glass itself. Fingerprints and residue can be stubborn, so if necessary use some alcohol or a neutral cleanser. Wipe the glass without putting too much pressure on the surface. Make sure to wipe away any excess liquid.
Clean the touch screen; this is where you will use the lint-free cloth (cotton is best) simply dampened with water. Again, wipe off any excess liquid.
Clean the ADF (automatic document feeder), where most problems develop. Lift the ADF unit up till it un-clicks from its position. Now using the lint-free cloth and some isopropyl alcohol, clean off the rollers that are used to feed the paper. You can gently turn each roller while cleaning so that you cover all of the roller.
Make sure that the rail that transports the scanning lens across the unit is clean by using isopropyl alcohol. A Q-Tip or two will be perfect for cleaning this area.
The steps outlined above should be repeated for preventative maintenance only every six months or when necessary.

Clean the print heads if your print quality is deteriorating by accessing the computer. Open any word processor or notepad application. From 'File,' choose 'Print' and then look for the 'Properties' tab.
Select the 'Print head' menu, then the 'Clean Print Heads' utility and let the unit go through the cleaning procedure.
If the actions in Step 2 do not help you can remove the print cartridges and try a gentle wiping of the cartridge with your lint-free cloth and a small amount of water(see Resources below).

How to Buy a Brother Printer Waste Ink Tank (5 Steps)

Know the keywords. For example, Brother's official website is a natural starting point, but you won't find the tank by searching it as such. You'll want to search by 'waste' or 'toner cleaner,' as it is listed as a waste toner cleaner. It looks like a simple plastic container, and you can buy it directly from the site for $16.99.
If you've exhausted searching at the 'usual suspects'--your local office-supply retailer--check out Brother Mall. The manufacturer recommends it as a source for all kinds of hard-to-find Brother supplies and accessories. (Follow the link in Resources.)
Check and double-check the model number. No matter how or where you buy, ascertain that the tank will work with your specific Brother printer. You don't want to find out until it's too late that the tank isn't right. Hint: Online, the appropriate model is listed under the photo and price. Often, one letter or one number can make a big difference.
Familiarize yourself with the return process. Many times, these supplies are non-refundable if opened, making Step 3 all the more important.
Try discounted office-supply sites. Note: Not all will have this product. Many specialize in toners and cartridges. A good bet is Quill.com (see Resources), as well as OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) sites that are authorized to sell brands like Brother.

How to Preserve an Open Printer Ink Cartridge

Place a piece of paper towel on to a flat surface -- countertop, desk or any other work surface.
Place the open ink cartridge upside-down on the paper towel. You should see the ink cartridge's opening (the small hole where the ink flows out of).
Dampen a soft cloth with cold water from a sink. Wring out excess water. The cloth should be moist, not wet.
Wipe the ink cartridge's opening gently with the damp cloth. Wipe the opening and the area around the opening. If the printer ink cartridge is one with multiple ink tanks, wipe each opening that is uncovered. If you only opened the one color, leave the other tanks sealed with their protective tape.
Cover the ink cartridge's opening with a piece of vinyl tape. If the printer ink cartridge is one with multiple ink tanks, and you removed the protective tape from each one, place a different piece of vinyl tape over each ink tank's openings. Do not use one long piece of vinyl tape to cover the ink tank's openings. Ink from the different tanks can contaminate each other and can ruin the ink cartridge.
Dampen a clean cloth with cold water from a sink. Wring out excess water. The cloth should be moist, not wet. Do not use the cloth you used for cleaning the printer ink cartridge.
Place the damp cloth and the ink cartridge in a plastic storage bag that seals close (Ziploc). The damp cloth will keep the ink cartridge from drying out.
Store the plastic storage bag in a cool, dry place.
Check on the ink cartridge once a week, and re-moisten the cloth with cold water if it is getting dry.

How to Connect a Canon Printer (5 Steps)

Unpack and set up your printer according to the manufacturer's specifications. Make sure the power is on and ink and paper are installed. If you have one of the Canon photo printers, don't waste your good photo paper yet; just load in some plain business paper.
Connect the square end of the USB cable to your printer. There should only be one port in the back of the printer that will take the connection.
Connect the other end of the wire to the computer. There should be several ports that will take this wire; they are usually located on the back of the machine.
Boot up your computer.
Watch for an announcement that Windows XP or Vista has 'discovered' your printer--it's usually something along the lines of 'New Hardware Found,' then 'Canon xxxx.' Follow the directions that appear on the screen. If this doesn't work, or you have an older version, just insert the driver CD into your computer and follow the directions.

How to Print a Poster Using an HP All in One (19 Steps)

Load your HP All-In-One printer with half a pack of photo paper. Hold the paper by its edges to keep any fingerprints off of the paper.
Open the file of the photo you want to print, using the program you normally use to print photos from.
Click 'File,' then 'Print' from the program's menu bar.
Select the 'HP All-In-One' printer, if it is not your default printer. Do not click the mouse -- just highlight the printer.
Click 'Properties,' 'Options,' 'Printer Setup,' 'Printer' or 'Preferences' -- depending on the software package you have.
Click on the 'Advanced' tab.
Select '2x2,' '3x3,' '4x4' or '5x5' under the 'Poster Printing' drop-down list. Note, the '2x2' selection requires four sheets of paper, '3x3' requires nine sheets of paper, '4x4' requires 16 sheets of paper and the '5x5' section requires 25 sheets of paper.
Click 'OK.'
Click 'Print.' Your photo will start printing.
Carefully lay the printed pages out on a flat surface. Wear latex gloves to keep from smearing the ink on the pages.
Let the printed pages dry for five minutes.
Arrange the printed pages so the poster is formed. Notice which borders need to be trimmed. You don't want to trim all of the borders -- you need to leave one border on the side and one border on the top or bottom of the printed pages to glue the trimmed ones on to.
Place a ruler on top of one of the printed pages and trim off the white border that needs to be removed. Use a cutting tool such as a sharp box cutter-like knife or other tool to remove that border. To speed up the trimming process, use a paper cutter.
Continue trimming off the white borders that need to be trimmed on each printed page.
Apply glue from a glue stick or other adhesive to one of the printed page's untrimmed border.
Carefully place the trimmed printed page that matches the other printed page on top of the glue-applied untrimmed border.
Gently press the two pages together using a clean soft cloth.
Repeat steps 15 through 17 for the next two printed pages you need to glue. Continue gluing and placing until all the pages are connected and the poster is complete.
Let the poster dry completely before hanging, laminating or placing it in a frame.

Go to the Control Panel and click on 'Printers and Faxes.' Right-click the Epson printer that you need to clean and go to 'Printing Preferences.' Select the 'Maintenance' or 'Head Cleaning' tab. (You can find the printer under the 'Applications' folder if you're using a Mac.)

Do not play with the printer while it is cleaning and don't attempt to print anything while the print head is being cleaned.
When the cleaning is complete, select 'Print Nozzle Check' under your printing preferences dialog box and then 'Print.' After the print heads are cleaned, the results of this printout will help you gauge whether the cleaning helped or not. If the lines on the printout are broken, then there is still a problem. But if it prints solid, then you're done. Redo the print head cleaning process if the lines on your nozzle check printout have gaps.

How to Install a Printer Driver Without the Printer Connected

Locate the driver installation program for your printer. This installation program is typically found on a CD that is included with the printer, or you can download it from the printer manufacturer's website.
Run the driver installation program from the CD or the file you downloaded from the Internet. If you are asked to attach the printer at a point during this process, you can bypass this step, and try to finish installing the driver anyway. However, depending on the driver and printer manufacturer, the driver might not install correctly or refuse to install at all until the installation program detects that the printer is attached.
Restart your computer after the installation is complete to ensure that the driver is properly installed. To check whether it is installed properly or not, you need to attach your printer, and make sure that your computer recognizes it and is able to print correctly.

How Do I Print Transparent Stickers With My Printer?

Determine if your printer uses laser or inkjet technology. This is often stated on the front panel of the printer itself. If you can't find the information there, refer to your printer's manual.
Acquire transparent sticker paper that's appropriate for your type of printer. Some brands have specific products for inkjet printers or laser printers, while others are compatible with both. Most office stores will carry a selection, and many varieties can also be purchased online. Try to find paper that fits your needs. For instance, if these stickers are for mailing envelopes, find sheets that have been precut into rectangles.
Place the sticker paper into your printer tray. In most cases, you want the labels to be facing down, as printers typically print on that side.
Open a word processor or image editor and carefully arrange the data so it will be printed onto the right surface. For instance, if you're printing addresses for envelopes, make sure that the addresses are spaced in such a way that each one falls neatly onto one of the stickers. To do so, use a ruler to measure the length and height of the stickers, as well as the distance between them. (This information may also come with the sticker sheets.) Many word processors and image editing software have rulers at the top and side of the screen. Use these to gauge where your text should fall.
Print your document. With most programs, this is done by clicking File and then Print. Alternatively, there may simply be a Print Icon that you can press on the program's toolbar. It will look like a printer with paper coming out of it.
Check to make sure that the printer has printed the labels on the stickers. If it missed, repeat Step 4 paying special attention to where you place the data.
If you are using an unmodified sticker sheet, cut the stickers using a pair of scissors.

How to Troubleshoot the Fax Machine on an All

Plug the power cords in, push the power buttons on and get everything up and running. Sounds simple, but lack of power is the culprit quite often.
Check for a phone connection in the correct input jack. Some printers with fax capability have more than one phone jack so you can hook up an answering machine or another phone 'downstream' from the printer. Consult your instruction manual to determine the right connection for your printer.
Swap out the all-in-one printer for a working phone to find out if the problem is in the phone line coming from the wall. Once you hook up the phone, you should get a dial tone if the line is working. Remember to reconnect the all-in-one printer after you're done.
Open up the machine and examine the feed path for the documents that you fax. Clear any obstructions you may find. Repeat this process with the paper tray and the path that copy paper takes through the all-in-one printer.
Verify the fax number of your intended recipient. Also get your correct fax number out to the people who need it.
Review your operating instructions and eliminate the chance for human error. Inadvertently skipping a step or misinterpreting an operation could be creating a problem that is simple to fix.
Run through any system-specific troubleshooting regimen that is recommended by the all-in-one printer's manufacturer.

How to Hook Up a Canon Printer to a Server (5 Steps)

Connect the Canon printer using appropriate cables. Depending on the type of printer, most will use either a USB or a network cable.
Load the printer-specific driver onto the server. If the printer is not auto-recognized, you will need to load the driver that came with the printer. This will either be on a CD or can be downloaded from the Internet. Navigate your browser to Canon's website and search for the appropriate driver. A link is provided in the Reference section.
Configure sharing properties. Once the print drivers are loaded, open the printer's preferences and select 'Sharing.' This will allow you to share the printer with others on the network. Depending on your server, you may need to assign either a network name to the Canon printer or assign it an IP address.
Load printer drivers onto the networked computers. Each computer that will have access to the printer will need to have the print driver loaded and installed. Once installed, configure the driver to print to either the printer's name or IP address that was assigned.
Print a test page. This will confirm that the printer is connected to the network and may reveal any issues if the test print does not print out.

How to Find an Inkjet Printer with Fast Print Speeds

Make a budget. Faster printers tend to be more expensive. Know how much you are willing to spend for the time you'd be saving with faster print speeds.
Ask around for recommendations. Talk to family, friends or neighbors to see if they've had good luck with high-speed printers.
Think about what you usually print (pictures? school papers? massive corporate reports?) to determine the print speed you need. Most high-speed printers print about 30 black-and-white pages per minute and about 24 color pages per minute.
Consider what paper type you usually use. Some high-speed printers do not print well on glossy paper. Although a high-speed printer may not be the best choice for printing high-quality photos, it might be great for printing research papers or presentations.
Ask for print samples. Once you have narrowed down your final choices of high-speed printers, ask for sample print-outs. You might have to pay for these copies, but this step will help you decide whether or not the quality is good enough for your needs.
Purchase the printer you feel is right for you once you've weighed your options and potential uses.

How to Install a Lexmark Printer (5 Steps)

Power up the printer. Plug the power cord into the back of the printer and press the power button one time to turn the printer on. If the printer does not respond, make sure that the power cord is completely plugged into the printer and the power outlet.
Insert inkjet print cartridges. If you have an inkjet printer, unwrap the print cartridges that came with your printer and securely fasten them in the printer cartridge carriage inside the printer. How to insert the inkjet cartridges will vary depending on the model of your Lexmark printer. Regardless of the model, you should not manually drag the print cartridge carriage over to install the cartridges. All inkjet models have a carriage that automatically moves to allow you easy access for installing cartridges. Be sure that the ink cartridges are firmly secured in the carriage before using the printer.
Plug the USB cable into the printer. Plug the type B connector end (the smaller square-shaped end) of the USB cable into the designated port on the printer. Do not plug the USB into the computer until prompted to do so by the installation CD.
Insert and run the installation CD. Most computers will run the setup program automatically after you insert the CD. If your computer does not automatically do this, select your CD drive and explore the contents of the CD. Double-click the 'setup.exe' file. Follow the instructions the installation program provides.
Print a test page. After you have completed installing the software for your printer, you will have the option to print a test page. This will confirm whether your installation and setup was successful. Be sure that you have loaded paper into the appropriate tray before printing a test page.

How to Clean an HP LaserJet (8 Steps)

Clean the outside of the machine using a slightly damp cloth. Do not use the cloth on the inside of the machine.
Open the printer cover and remove the toner cartridge. Using a dry, lint-free cloth, wipe down all interior surfaces.
Download and install the HP Laserjet Cleaning Utility from the HP website (see Resources.) Installation merely requires copying the files onto your hard drive.
Once the files have been copied, open HPPCLEAN.EXE.
Select 'Clean' from the main menu. This will bring up the 'Print' screen. Select your model of printer.
Select the number of cleaning pages to print. The default number is three; extremely dirty printers may require anywhere from six to twenty pages to thoroughly clean them. If you have been cleaning the printer regularly, three pages should be sufficient. If prints are emerging extremely smudged, with the spaces in letters filled with ink and lines appearing in the margins of the paper, select 10 or more pages. If in doubt, select more cleaning pages -- the printer will not be harmed by excess prints.
Click 'OK.' The printer will cycle through the cleaning process by printing several different patterns on one or more sheets of paper. The patterns clean the fuser and print head as they are printed. When the process is complete (which may take up to 15 minutes) dispose of the pages in the recycle bin.
Print a test page to ensure that the printer is working satisfactorily again. If prints are still smudged, run the cleaning cycle again.

How to Print Labels From Your Computer's Printer

Load the unprinted label paper into your home printer. Make sure to arrange the paper so the printer imprints on the sticker side of the paper.
Download the appropriate template for your labels from the company's web page. The label type and number is usually printed clearly on the front of the label package. Refer to this information on the company's website. Save the template on your computer.
Open Microsoft Word, an Adobe program, or another word processor, and click 'File' then 'Open' on the main toolbar. Navigate to the folder where the template was downloaded and click 'OK.'
Edit the labels using the word processor. Enter text or pictures to print on the labels.
Click on 'File' then 'Print' from the main toolbar at the top of the screen. At the preview screen, check the orientation of the labels to ensure they align correctly. Click 'Print.'
Review the printed labels for any overprinting or misaligned text.

How to Clear a Paper Jam in a Lexmark Laser Printer

Take the paper out of the paper trays. This will prevent any more paper from being drawn into the printer to further the jam.
Remove the cover from the housing of your Lexmark laser printer. This will expose the inner workings of the printer, and you also should be able to see the jammed paper.
Pull gently on the jammed paper. In many cases this is all that is required; the paper jam should move out slowly and smoothly.
Press the flashing paper jam button. This will allow the rotors to turn freely, which will facilitate the easy removal of the jam.
Unplug your Lexmark laser printer if the jam persists. This will allow you to pull more firmly without the gears working against you.
Examine the inner workings and confirm that all paper and shreds of paper have been removed. If the paper tore during the clearing, make sure none remains or it will inhibit normal printer function.
Plug the printer back in, refill the paper tray and try to print again.

How to Override a Paper Jam Error on an HP Printer

First, clear the jam if there is one. This step should resolve problems most of the time. If your machine has multiple compartments feeding paper, check all of them. Be extremely careful when pulling out jammed paper not to damage the print mechanism. Consult your machine's manual to determine the best way to pull jammed paper. Also remove any loose paper from trays and document feeders. After the paper is removed, your machine may automatically continue printing; if it does not, you may have to push 'OK' or another selection, depending on the product.
Make sure your paper is correctly loaded and has no folds, tears, staples or paper clips. Also verify in your user manual that the type of paper you are using is supported by the machine.
If you still have an error, try cleaning the paper rollers. Make sure you power off the machine. Take a damp cloth and wipe any dust or dirt buildup.
Try a power reset. Turn off the machine and unplug it for at least 15 seconds. Then plug it back in and see if the problem is resolved.
On a small printer, make sure the carriage is able to move freely. Make sure your machine is on, and open the cover; the carriage should move on its own. Remove any paper or objects that might be obstructing its path.
After the problem appears to be resolved, print a self-test report. The method for doing this varies with each machine, so consult your user manual.
If you are still having difficulty, consult HP directly. You may need to have your printer serviced.
