How Do I Clean My HP Printer Heads?
Recognize that your printer is probably not completely out of ink. HP inkjet printers come equipped with a sensor that warns you when you're running low on ink, which is measured by the weight of the ink cartridge. However, many times this sensor gets thrown off track when the ink can't move forward onto the printer heads. This is usually because the tiny holes on the printer heads have become clogged with dried ink, especially if the printer hasn't been used for some time.
Run the automatic utility tool that comes with your HP printer. This might remedy your problem. Move on to Step 3 to manually clean the printer heads if this doesn't work.
Take a moment to get familiar with the components of your HP printer, if you haven't already done so. Most HP inkjet printers have a small handle on the front that opens a door or tray. When you open it, you'll hear the printer cartridges--one for black ink, one for color--move toward the center position. However, depending on your model, you may only have one cartridge for both inks. Note too that HP cartridges contain built-in printer heads, as opposed to other brands that utilize stationary printer heads and removable ink cartridges.
Firmly grasp the cartridge on the left with your thumb on the top and your forefinger on the bottom and pull in a downward motion. This will release the ink cartridge from its bay so that you can completely remove it. Once removed, place the cartridge on its side on a paper towel or piece of paper.
Pour a capful of isopropyl alcohol (rubbing alcohol) into a small dish or cup and dab a cotton swab into it to moisten. You don't want the swab saturated, so twist the head of the swab around the side of the container to remove any excess.
Gently rub the moistened cotton swab over the printer heads a few times, or until the copper contacts look clear.
Set the cartridge down on the paper towel or paper again to dry. In about five minutes, you can return it to its bay in the printer.
Repeat these steps with the second cartridge (if applicable) and close the access panel door on your printer. You should now be able to print clearly with clean printer heads.
How to Set Photoshop to Match Your Printer
Find your printer's International Color Consortium (ICC) file. This file is usually bundled on your driver installation CD, or can be found online from your printer manufacturer's website. Every individual printer series has a unique ICC color profile file, so find the one that matches your printer exactly. If you have installed your printer's drivers from a CD, try searching for files ending in .icc or .icm.
Open Photoshop and the image you want to print by clicking on the 'File' menu and choosing 'Open.' Navigate to the image file, click on it and then click 'Open.'
Assign the color profile to the image by clicking on the 'Image' menu and choosing 'Mode' and then 'Assign Profile.' Find the ICC or ICM file associated with your printer, select it and click 'OK.'
Edit the photo using your printer's colorspace. Because Photoshop will limit the available colors to the colors that can be rendered by your printer, the image you can see on the screen will more faithfully be represented on paper.
Access the 'File' menu and choose 'Print with preview.'
Under the 'Color Handling' drop down menu, select 'Let Photoshop Determine Colors.' Photoshop should automatically apply your printers ICC color profile, but if it does not, select your printer's profile from the list.
Under the 'Rendering Intent' option, choose 'Relative Colorimetric' and check 'Black Point Compensation' to tell Photoshop to render the colors in a way that matches the colors your printer is able to print.
How to Keep Paper From Sticking Together in a Printer
Store the paper flat in a dry place. Do not remove the packaging from the paper until you are ready to print on it. This keeps humidity from being absorbed into the paper.
Use only high-quality sheets of paper that are not crimped or wrinkled. Paper that is not completely flat may not feed individually through a printer.
Fan the paper before inserting it into the printer if you do not normally fan it. If you normally fan it and are experiencing problems, try not fanning it. Fanning in especially dry environments can build up static electricity in the paper.
Load only as many sheets of paper as the printer feed tray can hold. There is usually a mark on the paper feed area indicating the maximum fill line. Consult the printer manual for the recommended number of sheets for your printer if you do not see a mark.
Clean the rubber printer uptake rollers in the printer periodically. The rollers can pick up paper dust or residue and fail to separate the sheets of paper adequately. If necessary, replace worn rollers. Also check the printer for dust, paper fragments or other debris in the paper path on a regular basis.
Use the shortest and flattest printing path through the printer. There is usually a diagram in the printer's manual or on the printer manufacturer's website demonstrating the printing paths through your printer. Use the path least likely to bend the paper.
Insert the paper into your printer with the printable side toward the print head. The printable side of the paper is usually indicated by an arrow on the packaging.
