How to Troubleshoot a Deskjet Printer (10 Steps)
Remove the printer's USB cable from your computer.
Uninstall the printer's software. (Visit 'Start,' 'Control Panel' and 'Uninstall a Program.')
Restart the computer.
Turn off the printer and wait one minute before turning the device on again.
Insert your software disc and follow the onscreen instructions to reinstall the software. Reinsert the USB cord when prompted.
Press the 'On' button again if you pressed it once and the printer did not turn on. Press the button a little more slowly the second time. Pressing the button very quickly does not give the printer long enough to actually register that it should turn on.
Make sure that that the print cartridges are properly loaded in the printer and that there is a supply of paper loaded into the printer if the device is not printing when you click 'Print' on your computer.
Open the lid to the printer to check for a paper jam. If there is a paper jam, carefully pull the jammed piece of paper through the printer, being careful to not tear it.
Check to make sure the printer cable is securely connected into both the printer as well as the USB port on your computer. Also make sure this cord is not more than about 10 feet long. A cord longer than this can cause printing problems.
Connect the USB cord to another USB port on your computer and attempt to print again. The printing problems could stem from a USB port not working properly.

How to Make Homemade Vinyl Bumper Stickers on an HP Printer
Open Microsoft Publisher or similar program.
Click File, New and Blank Page Sizes. Click on Letter (Landscape) 8.5 x 11.
Click on the A icon that contains lines (text tool) under the arrow on the toolbar on the left side of the screen.
Click inside of the blank document to place the text box. Double-click the text box to enter it.
Enter the text you want to print on the bumper sticker. To change the text's color, font or other attribute, highlight the text with your mouse then click on the font, color or style icon on the toolbar at the top of the program. Click anywhere outside of the text box to close the text box.

Double-click on the file's name to place it. If you would like to select a clip art item, click Insert, Picture and Clip Art... The Clip Art selection pane will open. Double-click the graphic to place it on your bumper sticker.

Fan the vinyl decal paper for one minute to separate any sheets that may be stuck together. Pull out any bent or damaged sheets.
Load the vinyl decal paper into your HP printer with the coated side facing the direction your printer printsfacedown if using an HP inkjet printer that is front loading or faceup if the printer is top loading. If using an HP laser printer, load the paper facedown (default setting) if placing the paper in a tray. If using the Bypass tray, place the paper faceup.
Click File and Print Preview to view your bumper sticker before printing. If changes are needed to the design, click Close to return to the document and make the changes.
Click on the printer icon to print the sticker if everything is OK. Do not select Photo or Gloss paper within your printer's Properties box--this will cause the printer to apply too much ink to the bumper sticker, which can cause the ink to run and fade faster when the sticker gets wet.
Let the bumper sticker dry for at least 20 minutes before handling the paper or applying the sticker. Use a paper cutter to cut the sticker out.

How to Change Ink Cartridges on a Brother MFC Inkjet Printer
Obtain a new ink cartridge(s) for the Brother MFC printer. Read the 'Ink Empty' error message that appears on the LCD display screen on the top or front of the printer. This message usually states which colors you need to replace. Temporarily place the cartridges to the side of the printer on a flat surface.
Access and open the compartment on the inside of the printer that holds the ink cartridges. In some models, you must lift the flat-bed scanner cover to see the ink cartridges. Other models have an ink compartment door to the right side of the machine.
Remove the empty ink cartridge. Unlatch the locking mechanism that holds the cartridge in place, if available. Pull the cartridge out from the machine. Discard it in the trash.
Open the plastic wrapping or container that holds the replacement cartridge(s). Peel off the protective tape that covers the contact points.
Look at the colors of the receptacles that hold the ink cartridges. Pick up the new ink cartridge for a single color. Use the guiding arrows on the cartridge and inside the printer to slide the tank into the machine. Carefully push the cartridge in until it stops. Repeat this step for each additional replacement cartridge.
Close the locking latches that hold the ink cartridges in place, if available. Close the flat-bed door or compartment door for the ink cartridge area.
Look at the LCD screen on the printer. Most models can automatically sense when a new cartridge is in place. Read the question and follow the instructions on the screen. For example, the printer might display the following sequence of text: 'Did you change the black cartridge?' > 'Press 1 = Yes' > 'Press 2 = No.' Use the numeric keypad near the LCD screen to enter your response. Proceed with sending print jobs to the machine.
